SKIIF: More about Participants

  1. AUCTYON (Russia) & Khvost (France):

    AuctYon

A rock band which dates back to Leningrad's legendary rock scene of the 80s. Elaborate and subtle rhythmic foundation supports improvised solos and clever and sarcastic lyrics. Frontman Oleg Garkusha is one of the heroes of the scene and indispensable member of Kyryokhin's Popular Mechanics.

    Alexey Khvostenko

A pre-rock generation bard. A true beatnik. A poet, a singer, a legend. Has not been heard much live in his homeland which he left more than 20 years ago. Lives in Paris. A perfect match with AuktsYon.

  2. PROJECT OBJECT: the music of Frank Zappa

Project Object was formed out of love for the music of Frank Zappa. A few years before Frank's death, they started playing at an annual "Zappa birthday bash" hosted by guitarist Cholmondeley. As popularity grew, so did the band, and it mutated into it's current lineup. Most of the musicians involved work on other projects, and the drummers run a custom log drum company. Project-Object is unique amongst Zappa "tribute" bands because they bring the element of surprise and improvisation into the tight segues and polyrhythms of his work. Moving from doo-wop to space jazz to ridiculous 11-tuplets to full fuzztone attack, the energy of the live Zappa experience is humbly evoked.

  3. OBER-MANEKEN:

Ober-Maneken is a legendary Moscow band. Its leaders, Anjey Zaharichev and Evgeni Kalachev define their own style as TransDecadance. In 1990 the band arrives to New York . Here it gives over 100 concerts in such clubs as SBGB's, MK, the Knitting Factory, sharing the stages with Pearl Jam, Tibetan throat singers, among others.

In 1995 Ober-Maneken receives a commission from Berlin Academy of Arts to write a music for a Russian Classical theater play "Misery of Being Wise " by Alexander Griboedov.

Their arts combines in itself Nietzscheanesque romanticism with psychedelia of Dostoevsky. Brilliant guitar (Anjey), breathtaking drums (Oleg Butman) and excellent vocals (Eugeni) make Ober-Maneken the most outstanding Russian rock band in the USA.

Ober-maneken has three CDs to their credit (Bliss/Polygram records), as well as love and crowded houses on both sides of the Atlantic.
